KDCI-KATURISMO IMMERSES IN THE LIVING CULTURE OF THE T'BOLI TRIBE Final Requirement in Heritage Tourism under Mr. Fred Siapo Sarco
Lake Sebu, South Cotabato | October 31, 2026
Beyond the classroom, beyond the books — true tourism education lives in the community.
On October 31, 2026, the BS Tourism Management students of Kidapawan Doctors College, Inc. (KDCI-KaTurismo) embarked on a meaningful cultural immersion at the heart of the cultural gem of the South — Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, as part of their final requirement in Heritage Tourism under the guidance of Professor Mr. Fred Siapo Sarco.
The activity was not just a tour; it was a journey of understanding, respect, and appreciation for one of the most revered Indigenous Cultural Communities in Mindanao — the T’boli Tribe.
Nestled in the highlands overlooking the majestic Lake Sebu, the students were warmly welcomed by the T’boli community, known for their rich heritage, vibrant traditions, and world-renowned craftsmanship.
The KaTurismo students had the rare privilege to witness and learn firsthand the living heritage of the T’boli people. They listened to the stories of the elders — stories of some T’boli tribe, of the sacred T’Nalak Weavers, and of how culture is passed from one generation to the next. They marveled at the intricate process of T’nalak weaving, the sacred abaca cloth dreamed by the weavers, where every pattern tells a story and every color has a meaning. They experienced the soulful sounds of the Kulintang, Agung, and Hegalong, and were moved by the graceful, bird-like movements of the T’boli traditional dances.
More importantly, the students learned the core lesson of Heritage Tourism — that tourism is not just about promoting a place, but about protecting its people, preserving its culture, and respecting its identity.
Under the instruction of Sir Fred Siapo Sarco, the students were taught to observe with sensitivity, to interact with respect, and to document with integrity. They understood that as future tourism professionals, they are not just promoters, but stewards and protectors of our cultural heritage.
This immersion taught them that the T’boli are not merely an attraction. They are a living community, a living culture, and a living treasure that we, as KaTurismo, must help preserve and champion with pride and responsibility. The activity concluded with a deep sense of gratitude — gratitude to the T’boli community of Lake Sebu for opening their homes and hearts, gratitude to Sir Fred Siapo Sarco for bringing heritage tourism to life, and gratitude to Kidapawan Doctors College, Inc. for providing such transformative learning experiences.
Truly, the KaTurismo of KDCI came to Lake Sebu as students, but they left as culturally-aware advocates — carrying with them not just knowledge, but a renewed commitment to champion authentic, sustainable, and culturally-sensitive Philippine tourism.
Mabuhay ang Kulturang T’boli! Mabuhay ang Heritage Tourism! Mabuhay ang KaTurismo ng KDCI!
